$48,000 High-Tech Surface Table Co-designed by Formula One Racer
This award-winning design is sure to turn heads. During the 2007 Milan Exhibition of Design, the British-based design firm, Established & Sons, launched its “Collaborations” program with a plan focused on developing partnerships between designers and artists.
In 2008, an alliance between furniture designer Terence Woodgate and Formula One race car designer John Barnard produced the Surface Table. Woodgate is a modernist well known for simple aesthetic in his designs and Barnard brings his state-of-the-art automotive knowledge of incorporating high-tech auto-sport and aerospace technology. The table is meticulously crafted from layered carbon fiber and steel, with the option of high gloss or satin matt lacquer. The table spans of three meters long and an edge that has a thickness of only two millimeters, which is five times thinner than its nearest equivalent.
“We were interested in taking the form of a normal table, one with legs at each corner, as far as we possibly could. It became a search for perfection. Radius corners, round legs, domed feet and rounded edges all accentuate the slimness of the design making the entire form a seamless, blended geometric surface,” says Terence Woodgate.
In 2009, the design duo introduced the Surface Chair. Created with the same DNA from the original concept, the carbon fiber chair is set with a leather seat.
The Surface Table cost $48,000 is available for special order.
